Gifts for Architects, Designers & Engineers: Sculptural Stone Objects for the People Who Think in Form

From the studio:

Shopping for an architect, a product designer, or an engineer can be tricky. These particular human beings like things just-so, and can often be hard to think up something beyond the tired coffee table book, the very nice pen, the monogrammed thing. These gifts are always appreciated but may not earn a place in their day-to-day.

What we’ve learned, through years of giving sculptural objects to the designers, architects, engineers, and makers in our own lives, is that the gift that sticks around is the one they didn’t know they wanted, but can’t put down once they pick it up.

We’ve put together a short guide to the DAR pieces that work for people who think in form. Each one is hand-carved from Andean gemstones in workshops across northern Peru, by master craftspeople we’ve worked with for over a decade.

The statement gift: XL Gemstone Cube Puzzle ($325)

Our most ambitious piece and most-requested statement gift. Inspired by the classic Cube puzzle, hand-carved from a combination of seven distinct Peruvian stones, each from their own corner of the Andes. The configurations run into the hundreds, and no two XL Cubes are exactly identical, with the natural hues and veins varying from one cm to the next, finalizing the color combinations of these in our studio is a color-theorists dream-come-true.

For an architect or designer, the Cube stands out immediately: a solved spatial problem that invites being unsolved. For an engineer, combinatorial geometry that you can hold in your hand and endlessly reimagine. For anyone else on your gift list, this piece draws in guests immediately because inherently, we are all kids at heart who just want to play with stones.

The exclusive gift: XL Super Tangram ($495)

The latest interactive sculpture to join the DAR line. A seven-piece puzzle rooted in one of the oldest geometric games in the world, reinterpreted at coffee-table scale in stone from the Andes of Peru. Each Super Tangram is one of a very small batch, with pieces carved from a complementary mix of Andean gemstones chosen for how the colors read against each other and meant to be picked up and played with by people of all ages.

For the person who already has everything, the XL Super Tangram carries the joy of owning one of a very select few that have been recently created in our workshop, and the two-dimensional play will invite thoughtful play, with the lucky recipient kept at work inventing silhouettes on a desk or table for hours on end.

The accessible classic: Gemstone Cube Puzzle ($99)

A smaller version of our signature Cube at a very accessible price. Seven brightly colored gemstones that form a perfect cube in one of its many configurations. Same spatial play as the XL version, in a hand-held scale that lives on a desk or shelf.

The classic Cube is one of our bestsellers and consistently sells out, which tells us something about how reliably it lands as a gift. It’s also a delight to give, as we love seeing people take apart the colorful pieces and figure out one of 240 ways to put it back together.

The desk gift: Puzzle Coasters ($199)

A set of four hand-carved Andean soapstone coasters that together form a quiet puzzle on the desk or table when not in use. Also function as a trivet for a hot pan.

These are not your average set of coasters - the interlocking set works for an architect, designer, or engineer because they solve a small daily problem (where to put the glass) with an object that has geometric interest of its own. They work well in any environment, from a home office to a studio to an open-plan agency. These will quickly become the favorite addition to whatever table they land on.

The thoughtful desk accessory: Kinetic Spin Top ($99)

A hand-carved gemstone and brass spinning top, designed as a tactile analog break for the desk. The smooth brass handle and gemstone disk come with simple mechanics to self-assemble, making the piece perfectly portable and also extra satisfying to fiddle with.

For the designer or engineer who spends long hours on screen, the Spin Top is a small ritual object that invites moments of focus and analog play to refresh the brain a little between tasks. Available in 3 limited runs of stone: Turquoise, Pink Jasper, and Green Nefrite.

The small non-gift gift: Organic Catchall ($59)

We can’t get enough of these organic Catchalls, smoothly polished stone dishes that are carved following the natural texture and irregular veining of the stones. Hand-carved in soapstone or angelite or red or rust jasper, these satisfying catchall dishes work as a key tray in the front hall, a pen rest on a desk, a jewelry dish on a nightstand, an incense holder, a salt dish.. the list goes on!

The Catchall is our go-to for host gifts, teacher gifts, promotion gifts, and any moment that calls for something considered without being extravagant.

Why these gifts work for people who think in form

Architects, product designers, engineers, and creative professionals spend their working lives thinking about proportion, material, and the way objects behave in space. Most mass-market gifting ignores all three.

The DAR pieces in this guide share a logic. Each one is either a solved spatial problem (the puzzles) or a studied material object (the Catchall, the Spin Top). Each one invites being handled rather than displayed. Each one celebrates the natural variation of the stone it was carved from, which means no two gifts are identical. And each one is made by hand in a workshop whose master carvers DAR has worked with for over a decade.
